Nordic Walking – Not just a simple walk & all the benefits of running !

NWUKAbout Nordic Walking (NW)

What is it?

Well basically its a different form of walking, but with poles that act as a 3rd & 4th leg, so for obvious reasons increase upper body activation and slightly less lower body, more involvement of the ‘core muscles’ which simply put activates almost every muscle when Nordic walking

Nordic Walking uses poles to in order to add two major benefits to walking

  • The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs
  • The poles help to propel the walker along quicker with more efficiency, burns more calories distributes forces transmitted from ground and gravity more evenly with less likely overload to any one joint or muscle groups.

NWUK 2Nordic Walking is a specific fitness technique and is not to be confused with trekking, hill walking or trail running as the poles are not planted in front of the walker/runner but in a specific way that increases the use of the upper body. It can be done by anybody, anywhere and does not require expensive equipment or clothing.

Nordic Walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in the world and is used by individuals, personal trainers, health clubs, physiotherapists, doctors and health promoters because it is highly effective, affordable and FUN!

Nordic Walking technique MUST be learnt correctly if the participant is to get the most out of the activity – the full Health technique that ensures the whole body works efficiently is only taught by Nordic Walking UK instructors (NWUK)

Why is Nordic Walking important to me as an Osteopath ?

I first became aware of  NW when i came across some research on the effects / benefits of NW for back pain. I found this research not only exciting news for my patients but an alternative to the gym as not everyone wants to go into the gym or indeed can afford it. If that is the case NW is perfect and achievable. Nordic walking is completely an outdoors walk with poles and with appropriate c;lothing you can walk in all weathers. Once learnt, the results can be amazing in terms of improved mobility, hopefully less pain (back, hips, knees in time) overall improved energy levels and NW will become infectious !
